Juve's Love Story with Italian Goalkeepers

Almost 50 years ago in 1972, the legendary Dino Zoff began his career at Juventus, kickstarting the modern love story between Juventus and Italian goalkeepers. Then came one after another world-class GKs, and the love story continues even today with Gianluigi Buffon.

Dino Zoff

(Juventus: 1972-1983; Italy NT: 1968-1983)

“I played until the age of 41 just because I believe that it’s always possible to make improvements.” In the discussion of the greatest ever goalkeeper to play football, Zoff’s name never strays far. Concentrated and intelligent with great vision of the game, he was deeply respected both on and off the pitch. He joined Juventus at the age of 30, making a total of 479 appearances for the club. During his time with Juve, he won six Serie A titles and the 1982 World Cup as starter, even holding the record for the oldest World Cup winner at the age of 40.

Stefano Tacconi

(Juventus: 1983-1992; Italy NT: 1987-1991)

Purchased in 1983 as a replacement for Zoff, Tacconi spent his time at Juve during a wonderfully successful period of the club. He is the only goalkeeper to have won all international club competitions- the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Winner’s Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Intercontinental Cup. He achieved all of this as a Juventus player. Known for his strong personality and shot-stopping ability in penalties and decisive matches, Tacconi is yet another amazing goalkeeper to have played for Juventus.

Angelo Peruzzi

(Juventus: 1991-1999; Italy NT: 1995-2006)

Another seamless transition from one legendary goalkeeper to another, Peruzzi was signed in 1991 and soon surpassed Tacconi as Juve’s starting goalkeeper. Acrobatic, efficient, and strong, Peruzzi was nicknamed “Tyson” for his stocky build. During his 8 seasons with Juve, he won three Serie A titles, the 1996 Champions League, and various other titles.

Gianluigi Buffon

(Juventus: 2001-present; Italy NT: 1997-2018)

Last but certainly not least, perhaps the greatest goalkeeper ever, is Gianluigi Buffon. The epitome of a modern goalkeeper, Buffon is dynamic, experienced, and instinctive, commanding respect on the field. He is often cited by other world-class keepers as a role model. A Juventus legend in every single aspect, Buffon continues to provide a strong positive impact within the locker room. He stuck with Juve through thick and thin, ups and downs, wins and losses. 10 Serie A titles, 1 Serie B title, 3 Champions League runner-ups, the 2006 World Cup win… Buffon’s legacy is indescribable and eternal.
